  Last month I ordered some clear Western Red Cedar. I had a strange request since I'm building a cedar strip canoe, and needed 1,300 linear ft of it, in the form of 1"x1/4" strips, as long as possible. After reassuring them that I was ok with the amount of waste that would produce (there's no getting around that in this case), they took the order and told me it should be ready in a few days, with a price quote including mill work, much less than another local lumber yard just for the raw boards. I believe it was one day later, I received a call that it was ready, and they got a little more than 1,300 ft out of the boards. When receiving the strips, I was told it ended up costing even less! I noticed on the invoice it looked like they chose B&BTR and C&BTR boards, with random lengths 8-12 ft long, probably looking for boards that had the least number of knots, to help keep cost down instead of using perfect clear boards. They helped me bundle and load it, and gave me a caution flag due to the length. Once I transported it home and unpacked the strips, I found only a few pieces with knots which I can cut out. Perfect for my needs. They also ended up cutting the strips at about 5/16" thickness, so I was able to run them through my planer to get the perfect 1/4" I needed. Overall, it was a great experience. It was refreshing to work with a company that didn't try to gouge me on cost, and instead found ways to lower the cost without me even asking. I ended up paying about 60% of what I estimated it would cost at other locations.
